Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What happens during the first COUNSELLING / consultation session?

Many people express feelings of worry and nervousness when attending counselling for the first time. I hope that I am able to provide support to new clients and make them feel comfortable. The first session involves gathering information and discussing: your reasons for coming, past struggles you may have faced, family information, how you are coping with your current struggles, and then setting goals and planning next steps.

q. Are your services confidential?

Yes. Social Workers have an ethical and legal duty to hold in confidence the information that is shared during consultations. It is important that you feel like you are able to talk openly and honestly in our counselling sessions, knowing that all information discussed will be kept private.

My professional code of ethics, under the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, clearly defines that all information you share with me is confidential and will not be communicated (directly or indirectly) to anyone without your informed and written consent. There are limits to this confidentiality and these limitations will be discussed during the initial meeting.

Q. Are you the right person to help me?

It is important that you feel comfortable with your social worker and ensure I am a good fit. I am hopeful that we can build a positive therapeutic relationship and that my skills and expertise will help you reach your goals in our work together. Our initial session should give you a good idea about the therapeutic fit and help you decide if I am the right counsellor for you.

Q. What are your fees for service?

My hourly rate is set to commensurate with other GTA social workers. Through my registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers, my services are likely covered by your extended health care plan. To determine the details of your coverage, please contact your insurance provider. Fees are payable at the beginning or end of each session, unless we make other arrangements. I accept e-transfer, cash and cheque.

Q. Are your fees covered by OHIP?

While social work is a regulated health profession in Ontario, unfortunately it is not covered under OHIP. However, in most cases counselling is covered under extended health care plans. I encourage you to speak with your insurance provider about counselling services provided by a Registered Social Worker.

q. do you offer SLIDING SCALE FEES?

For those with very limited incomes or extreme financial difficulties, I do offer a "sliding scale" or special fee arrangement. Due to the high demand for this type of treatment, there may be a wait list and it is based on availability.

q. What if I need to cancel an appointment ?

I require 24 hours notice for the cancellation of an appointment. If you cancel with less than 24 hours notice, you will be charged the full rate of the session.
